Food Chains and Webs

1.     In your own words, explain what a food chain is.
2.     Where does all energy in the Earth’s food chains come from?
3.     What type of organism must every food chain start with?
4.     In a food chain, what is the name given to any organism that directly eats plants?
5.     Explain, in your own words, what a secondary consumer is?
6.     Do you think a secondary consumer can be a herbivore? Explain why or why not.
7.     Make and label a quick sketch for the plant, rabbit and fox food chain described by the video. Include the labels producer, primary consumer, secondary consumer, herbivore, and carnivore. Use arrows to show the flow of energy between organisms.
8.     What percentage of energy is passed from level to level in a food chain?
9.     Explain, in your own words, what a tertiary consumer is.
10. Explain, in your own words, what an apex predator is. Include three or more examples of these.
11. Describe the relationship between apex predators, decomposers and producers in a food chain.
12. What is a food web?
13. What do the arrows in a food web represent?

1.     Define, in your own words, what carnivores, omnivores and herbivore are.
2.     Explain, in your own words, the difference between food chains and food webs.
3.     What are the four main uses for energy in organisms?
4.     Briefly explain what an energy pyramid is.
5.     In a food pyramid with four levels, the producer creates 2000 units of energy. At the top level, how many units of energy are available for the apex predator? Show work and explain your answer. *The example in the video, as well as the image above may help you!
